One Body, Many Members -by Chaplain M
I have found myself these past few weeks in a myriad of venues where people have assembled into communities for work or recreation. From family picnics, to teams on the field, and workplace break rooms, even to the men and women in our military, one remarkable theme kept occurring: the emphasis that its individuals placed on the value of their own work or function for the appointed task. Now I realize that we can be proud of gifts and talents and achievements, etc. We were designed to discover what part we play in this life and where we belong; how we contribute. I celebrate all those blessings. It just struck me strange, the proud, pervasive perspectives.
Some of Paul’s writings speak to this issue. In Rom 12:5- 6; [paraphrase], I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. We have many members in the body but all the members do not have the same function. Since we have gifts that differ, according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly. Paul continues, If the foot says, because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body, or if the eye says, ‘I have no need of you’, how could the body operate? No, the foot is just as vital to the proper function of the whole body!! 1Cor12:18, 24-26, for God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. He has so composed the body, so that there be no division in the body, but that the members have the same care and respect for one another. If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one is honored, then all the members rejoice with it.
Each one of us is important, necessary and integral to the functioning of systems whether at work or play. Let’s honor the gifts God gives and encourage another to be all that we were created for. We are to grow up in all aspects into Him Who is the Head, even Christ from Whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causing the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love Eph 4:15-16.
